Discover July Market Finds - A Feast for the Senses!

Updated: Jul 22

Summer's in full swing here in Virginia, and the farmer's markets are overflowing with fresh, seasonal produce. We're talking juicy berries, sweet peaches, fresh chilies, and everything in between. It's a treasure trove for anyone who loves to cook - or just eat! This month, I snagged loads of tomatoes, corn, jalapeños and I'm excited to get creative in the kitchen. Let's see what delicious meals we can whip up together!

A Cornucopia of Summer Produce

Sink your teeth into the flavors of July with Virginia's vibrant summer produce, from berries to chilies and everything in between. Explore the bounty of the season and let your culinary creations shine with the freshest ingredients around! #JulyMarketFinds

Berries Galore!

Anyone else obsessed with berry season? Virginia markets are overflowing with these beauties – plump blackberries, tart raspberries, and blueberries bursting with flavor. I can't resist a handful straight up, but they're also perfect for pie fillings, jams, or just adding a pop of color to summer salads. My favorite way to preserve them is by freezing a sheet tray straight from the market.

Corn and Tomatoes: Summer's Dynamic Duo

Nothing beats biting into a perfectly grilled cob, those sweet kernels practically exploding in your mouth. And those Virginia tomatoes? So juicy and flavorful, they practically taste like sunshine. These two are a match made in heaven, perfect for salads, salsas, or just enjoying on their own. Need a salsa recipe? Scroll to the bottom of Hey it's been a while, but welcome August post and get cooking!

Peaches and Squash Blossoms: Nature's Delicacies

As July rolls in, the arrival of peaches signals the peak of summer indulgence. Sink your teeth into a ripe, juicy peach. These beauties are perfect for enjoying fresh, baking into sweet summer pies, or grilling for a smoky twist. Don't forget about the delicate squash blossoms, a hidden gem of the season! These edible flowers add a touch of elegance to any dish, their mild, slightly sweet flavor a delightful surprise for the palate. If you see some available grab a pint! They're great stuffed with cheese or veggies, dipped in tempura batter and lightly fried for a crispy appetizer.

Zesty Chilies for a Fiery Punch

For those who crave a bit of heat in their dishes, Virginia's markets offer a dazzling array of fresh chilies, from mild bells to fiery habaneros. Spice up your meals with these vibrant gems, whether you're roasting them for salsas, pickling them for a tangy kick, or adding them to sauces for an extra layer of flavor. The possibilities are as endless as the heat levels!

Tantalizing Tomatillos: A Fresh Twist

Don't overlook the unsung hero of summer produce - the tomatillo. These small, green fruits add a tangy, citrusy flavor to dishes, making them a must-have ingredient for salsas, dips and sauces. Embrace the versatility of tomatillos and let their unique taste elevate your culinary creations to new heights. I tend to add a pinch of sugar or teaspoon of agave syrup when blending these for salsa. This offsets the slight bitterness that occurs when cooking tomatillos.

Melons & Cukes - Beat the Summer heat with a side of refreshment!

Sugar Babies, Canary, Crimson Sweet and Buttercup melons are abundant this time of year. Bursting with delightful juicy, sweetness - these succulent fruits are perfect for al fresco barbecues, poolside snacking, or as a refreshing shaved fruit ice.

Crisp cucumbers make a wonderful complement to salads, sandwiches, or as a hydrating bite. I've been incorporating both into my ice water, along with a splash of lemon and a handful of basil.

Embrace the Flavors of July

The July market finds in Virginia are a true testament to the abundance and diversity of summer produce. Whether you're a seasoned chef, a passionate home cook, or just love good food, these fresh ingredients offer endless opportunities to experiment, create, and indulge in the flavors of the season. So, grab your reusable bag, head to any of the many farm stands and markets we have in town, and dig in!

With each bite, you'll discover a new level of appreciation for the bountiful gifts of summer. Happy exploring, and may your plates be filled with the vibrant colors and delicious tastes of July market finds!

Continue to eat well my friends 🫶🏽
